As a graphic designer, I get a lot of people asking me how to draw flowers .
Look closely at any flower and at first, you see only a complex layering of petals - the rose is a good example of this. In spite of this, on closer inspection, most flower outlines can be easily represented by just a few basic shapes. It's just knowing where to start.
Essentially, when it comes to learning how to draw flowers, you must realize that there are seven different shapes of flower. For example, there is the oval shape of the tulip, the round shape of the daisy and the triangular shape of the foxglove.
Now let's look at the petals. Again the shape of the daisy is no more than a series of fairly regular, oval 'spokes'. On the other hand, the rose has its petals wrapped around and around like a spiral. The tiger lily on the other hand has a combination of a triangle shape and ovals.
Once we understand this, it's much easier to 'read' the shape of the flower and petals and you're well on the way to learning how to draw flowers quickly and effectively.
